Public security and the private sector
Enabling civil society to contribute to more effective public security in Nepal
This project aimed to support more effective, inclusive and accountable public security in Nepal.
Current efforts to improve public security have largely focused on centrally-led reforms of formal structures. However, these do not reflect the diverse local priorities, including those of businesses and civil society.
We helped the business community to play a more active role as peacebuilders by supporting efforts by local security providers to improve public security. We also helped government officials, the police and businesses to gain a better understanding of the links between private and public security in Nepal.
We provided training on conflict-sensitivity, advocacy and strategy development, and facilitated dialogue between representatives of the private sector, civil society and security providers. We also supported joint initiatives led by local chambers of commerce.
