Mariupol: Living with conflict and post-conflict prospects
This paper explores the views of the inhabitants of Mariupol on living with conflict and the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.
Mariupol is a large industrial city in the south of the Donetsk region. The city is one of the most important industrial centres in Ukraine, since it is home to two major metallurgical companies. The Port of Mariupol is the largest and most well-equipped port on the Sea of Azov, one of Ukraine’s four biggest ports. After armed conflict broke out in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014, Mariupol became the most important strategic point in the country, a target of clashes between the two opposing sides.
This research looks at the views of the inhabitants of Mariupol and its environs on the local consequences of the conflict, to understand the expectations of citizens, businesses and government officials in terms of minimising the impact of the conflict, and to identify areas of dialogue and cooperation that may be possible among the community, businesses and local authorities in order to address the most pressing local issues.
The research was conducted by the Mariupol Youth Union and commissioned by International Alert with the financial support of the European Union.
Маріуполь: Життя з конфліктом та постконфліктні перспективи
Маріуполь – це велике промислове місто на півдні Донецької області. Мі-сто є одним з найважливіших промислових центрів України, тут розташовані два мета-лургійних підприємства. Міжнародний морський торговельний порт – найбільший і найбільш оснащений порт Азовського моря, один з чотирьох найбільших в Україні. З початком у 2014 році озброєного конфлікту на території Донецької та Луганської областей Маріуполь став найважливішою стратегічною точкою, об’єктом зіткнення про-тиборчих сторін.
Дослідження проводилося з метою з’ясувати уявлення жителів Маріуполя та його околиць про локальні наслідки конфлікту, визначення очікувань громадян, бізнесу та представників влади з мінімізації його впливу, а також пошуку точок діалогу і співпраці, які є можливими між громадою, бізнесом та місцевою владою з метою вирішення най-більш актуальних локальних питань.
Дослідження проведено громадською організацією «Маріупольська Спілка Молоді» на замовлення International Alert за фінансової підтримки Європейського Союзу.
